Geraint had also been a possible contender in the individual pursuit, but opted not to ride both events as he did not want to compromise the efforts of his team.
At the first World Cup of the 2009 season, Geraint set the 2nd fastest Individual Pursuit time in history, 4min 15.015sec. The only rider who has gone faster than Bradley Wiggins (Olympic record) or Geraint is Chris Boardman, who set a time of 4min 11.114sec at the World Championships in 1996, using an aerodynamic stretched out position that has now been banned. Geraint can, therefore, consider himself the fastest rider in the World over the distance under the current rules. He went on to dominate the final to win Gold in only his third race in the event.
Now riding for the newly formed Team Sky, Geraint is focusing on success on the road and got off to a flying start by winning the National Road Racing Championships in Pendle. His good form so far this season resulted in him being chosen to ride in the Tour de France.
With an impressive 5th place in the prologue and 2nd in the overall classification after Stage 2, Geraint is now focusing on supporting the team leader Bradley Wiggins.
Geraint still has his sights set firmly on the London 2012 Olympics and great things await.
